What we collect
- Your name and email address, when you sign up for the newsletter. That creates an account, which is how you can later change your name, stop the emails or delete everything.
- Whether your email is confirmed and whether the newsletter is on, with the dates you subscribed and unsubscribed.
- A log of the emails we sent you, such as the confirmation email and each newsletter, with the address each one went to, so a failed send can be retried and we can tell what was delivered. The text of a sign-in email is removed from the log once it has been sent.
There is no password for a visitor account. You sign in with a link sent to your email.
What is kept in your browser
When you sign in, two sign-in tokens are saved in this browser's local storage so that you stay signed in on this device. They are removed when you sign out. The site sets no advertising or tracking cookies.
If you use Google to sign in
Where the "Continue with Google" button is offered and you choose it, Google tells us your name and email address and that Google has verified the address. We store the name and email as above and nothing else from your Google account. Google's own privacy policy covers what Google records about the sign-in.
What your email is used for
Your email is used for the newsletter and for the emails your account needs, which are the link that confirms your address and the links that sign you in. We do not sell, rent or share your name or email, and we do not use them for advertising.
Services the pages load
The site is served through Cloudflare, and its typefaces come from Google Fonts. Both see your IP address when your browser asks for a page, as any web server does. The weather comes from the National Weather Service and NOAA by way of our own server, so those agencies do not see your visit.
How to unsubscribe
Every newsletter has an unsubscribe link at the bottom. One click stops the emails; you do not need to sign in. You can also sign in and turn the newsletter off from your account.
How to delete your account
Sign in, open your account and choose "Delete my account". The account is removed, with your name, your email and your sign-ins on every device, and the newsletter stops. The log of emails already sent keeps its rows, with your name and address replaced by a placeholder, so it shows that an email was sent but no longer to whom.
