Community life and classes in Grand Marais

For a town its size, Grand Marais has a lot of places to take a class or join in. Most are open to visitors as well as residents, and several are free. This guide lists who does what and how to reach them.

Classes and learning

Cook County Community Education

Community Education is the public school district's program for everyone who is not in a classroom during the school day. Its menu covers youth activities, adult activities, community activities, driver's education, Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and preschool screening. Youth sports such as junior tennis and kickball show up on its calendar. Registration is online through the district, and there is an email newsletter you can subscribe to from the Community Education page. Families with school-age kids should look here first.

Cook County Higher Education

Cook County Higher Education's stated mission is to provide education, training, access and support based in Cook County. Its motto is "Education where you live." It offers free tutoring, free advocacy and support from a student services manager, professional development workshops, training and testing for workplace certifications, and lifelong learning classes for the curious. It also runs the Bob Pratt Skills, Trades and Technology Scholarship, which takes applications at any time. Adults who want a degree or a trade certificate can ask here about what is available locally.

North House Folk School

North House was founded in 1997 by a handful of locals who cared about traditional craft. Its first catalog had 23 courses. It now hosts more than 350 classes and about 3,000 students a year on a harbor campus that grew around two former Forest Service buildings. The mission is to teach traditional northern crafts, and the catalog runs from blacksmithing and basketry to timber framing and boatbuilding. There are youth camps, local programs, financial accessibility programs, and work-study and volunteer options. The school store and welcome center are open 9 am to 5 pm, seven days a week. Grand Marais Art Colony

The Art Colony began in 1947, when Birney Quick, an instructor at the Minneapolis School of Art, opened a summer outdoor painting school here. It became independent in 1959 and bought the former St. John's Catholic Church, now Founders Hall, in 1963. Today it offers classes, artist residencies and studio access, and it organizes the Grand Marais Arts Festival. The main office is Studio 120 at 120 3rd Ave W, with office hours Monday to Friday, 10 am to 4 pm. Studio 21, at 21 West Highway 61, is seasonal; in September 2026 it was open Thursday to Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.

Places to go

Cook County Community YMCA

The Y has an indoor pool, a gymnasium, a sauna, fitness equipment and group classes, and it is tied to local child care. It is a branch of the Lake Superior YMCA, which offers financial assistance with membership. Published hours in September 2026 were 6:30 am to 8:00 pm Monday to Friday and 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday, closed Sunday. If you are visiting and want a swim or a workout on a rough-weather day, call and ask about guest access.

Grand Marais Public Library

The library is at 104 2nd Avenue West. Hours as published are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday 10 am to 5 pm, Wednesday 10 am to 8 pm, and Saturday 10 am to 2 pm. It is part of the Arrowhead Library System, so a card here reaches a much larger catalog, plus e-books and audiobooks through the Libby app. There is a meeting room you can reserve, and the library hosts events such as concerts.

Cook County Historical Society and its museums

The Historical Society dates to 1925 and runs five sites, all free:

• Cook County History Museum, in the 1896 lightkeeper's house at 8 S. Broadway Ave. Summer hours are Wednesday to Saturday 10 to 4 and Sunday 1 to 4.
• Johnson Heritage Post Art Gallery, a log building at 115 W. Wisconsin St. with rotating exhibits and a permanent collection of paintings by Anna C. Johnson. Summer hours match the museum; winter hours begin October 22 in 2026.
• Bally Blacksmith Shop, 100 Broadway Ave., built in 1911. Seasonal.
• Chippewa City Church (St. Francis Xavier), 1402 Highway 61. Seasonal.
• The fishing tug Nee-Gee and a replica 1930s fish house at the Recreation Area, 114 W 8th Ave. Self-guided.

Cook County Community Center

The county's community center sits on 19 acres at 317 W. 5th Street. It has an outdoor skating and hockey rink with a warming house, an indoor curling facility in winter, a skateboard park, tennis courts, playgrounds and rooms to rent. The University of Minnesota Extension office is here too. The office is open Tuesday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm; the outdoor facilities are open to the public from dawn to dusk.

The Hub

The Hub is the senior center, at 10 Broadway downtown, run by the Cook County Council on Aging. It describes itself as a center of activity with resources, programs that promote healthy living, and meals; the lunch menu is posted on its site. Its resource page also lists the Cook County Food Shelf, which it describes as open to anyone in need (218-387-2113).

Radio

WTIP is the community radio station, on the air since April 1998 and run as a nonprofit. You can hear it at 90.7 FM in Grand Marais, 90.1 FM in Grand Portage and 89.1 FM on the Gunflint Trail, or stream it. Its news covers county board decisions and school sports, and it carries a Cook County weather report. News tips go to news@wtip.org.

Local government

Cook County offices are in the courthouse at 411 W 2nd Street, open Monday to Friday, 8 am to 4 pm. The main number is 218-387-3000; Public Health and Human Services is 218-387-3620. Grand Marais City Hall is at 15 N Broadway and is open Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm except holidays. Volunteering

Several of these organizations ask for volunteers.

• History: the Historical Society wants people for regular shifts greeting guests at the museum and the Johnson Heritage Post year-round, and at the blacksmith shop and Chippewa City Church in summer. Email history@boreal.org.
• Radio: WTIP calls itself volunteer-powered. Volunteers host music shows and help with pledge drives and events. There is a sign-up form on its volunteers page.
• Craft: North House lists both volunteer and work-study options.
• Civic: the city and county both seat residents on boards and commissions, and post openings on their sites.
